Initial 12 months contract

The Rome Consensus 2.0 was launched at the UNODC in March 2020 in order to brighten an international debate on how to tackle the drug situation and respond to the needs of vulnerable people. Building on an original consensus position created in 2005, this new declaration seeks to engage supporters and signatories from around the world in order to ultimately influence and change policies on the ground. Now, through an alliance of founding partners and aligned NGOs, an ambitious global work plan has been developed in order to actionize the Consensus and realize its potential towards more humanitarian drug policies.

The Rome Consensus Partners are seeking an experienced, self-motivated, creative coordinator to oversee the delivery of the work plan, and help the Consensus and its partners achieve our ambitions for the coming 12 months, namely: 

  • Recruitment of at least 20 high-level organisations and individuals as committed partners of the Rome Consensus 2.0
  • Securing 100 organisational signatures and 10,000 individual signatures in support of the Rome Consensus 2.0
  • Presenting the Rome Consensus 2.0 to policy makers from 50 countries through a varied calendar of events and activities.

The Coordinator will work alongside the Rome Consensus Partners and expert consultants in digital communications to ensure the delivery of the work plan.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Manage the implementation, refinement and evaluation of the Rome Consensus 2.0 workplan – comprising a series of tasks across three inter-connected areas of work: coordination and sustainability; marketing and communications; and policy and advocacy.
  • Coordinate regular communications between partners, split between three working groups along the areas of work outlined above. This includes scheduling and hosting regular calls, setting agendas, recording notes and actions, and following-up on actions between calls.
  • Coordinate and guide the contributions of individual expert consultants and partners on specific areas of the work plan.
  • Promote the Rome Consensus 2.0 through events, meetings, online presence, and other advocacy opportunities.
  • Support the development of fundraising initiatives – including developing relationships with potential donors, and writing and submitting grant applications for the continued work of the Rome Consensus Partnership.
  • Create online content and ensure a strong digital presence for the Rome Consensus 2.0 as a means to secure, and maintain, a wide network of supporters and signatories.
  • Develop, implement, and manage our social and web media strategy based on Rome Consensus 2.0 goals, working with RC2 team to develop messaging and contents  
  • Manage and develop RC2 website and social media 
  • Communicate with field professionals and influencers via social media to create a strong network
  • Draft strategic press releases, opinion pieces, and other communications – including on behalf of Rome Consensus partners or champions – to ensure wide recognition of the Rome Consensus 2.0
  • Maintain a calendar of key events, campaigns and other opportunities for the promotion of the Rome Consensus 2.0, and coordinate engagement in these opportunities.
  • Coordinate and deliver online and physical meetings to promote the Rome Consensus 2.0, such as webinars or side events at UN fora.
  • Travel to meetings and target countries to meet with stakeholders in order to promote the Rome Consensus 2.0.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with key UN and government officials and agencies, as well as key civil society partners.
  • Develop a plan to monitor and evaluate progress against the Rome Consensus 2.0 work plan, and use these data to develop future work plans and funding proposals.

CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a good spread of the following qualities:

  • Demonstrated administrative and coordination experience.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of drug policy issues at the international, regional and/or national levels.
  • Demonstrable commitment to the spirit and values of the Rome Consensus 2.0.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple partners and stakeholders across different time-zones, including paid consultants and those contributing on a voluntary basis.
  • Self-sufficiency in terms of administrative duties.
  • Sound knowledge of online and social media communication and marketing methods.
  • Experience in website development and management
  • Excellent knowledge of email marketing tools, like Mailchimp 
  • Advanced knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other relevant channels
  • Understanding of SEO and web traffic metrics
  • Proactive and strong work ethic – ability to work on one’s own initiative, and to drive forward the work of others.
  • Strong understanding of the realities of policy making, multilateralism and diplomacy.
  • Strong experience in project development, project management, work planning and evaluation.
  • Experience in successful fundraising efforts, and the building of donor relationships.
  • Experience in working and collaborating with NGOs, including those representing marginalised and stigmatised groups.
  • Excellent communication skills for a wide range of audiences.
  • Proficiency in English, and ideally at least one other language.

OTHER INFORMATION

  • We aim to offer a 12 month contract, with a guide time commitment of 4-5 days per month.
  • The day rate is to be negotiated with the successful applicant, and will be paid monthly in dollars on receipt of an invoice.
  • Anticipated start date – We aim to make a selection in January 2021, and for the successful candidate to start working as soon as possible.
  • It is assumed that the successful applicant will work entirely remotely, but office facilities can be provided if needed in Rome, London, Berlin or New York. There will be occasional international travel to key meetings.
